Bringing confectionery to life in-store

Mints & gums were heavily affected by lockdown restrictions – with no commuting or travelling, and majority of the workforce moving to working from home, the traditional key occasions dropped significantly. Sugar confectionery singles were also impacted with fewer people impulse shopping as they switched to larger, weekly shops, often buying for a household rather than just themselves.

However, confectionery remains one of the top purchases in the channel and to support the growth as lockdown eases Perfetti Van Melle (PVM) are trialling a new branded rack – filled with Mentos Pure Fresh Gum, Mentos rolls and Fruittella, as well as appealing ‘2 for £1’ deals across the range. In April, leading confectionery brand Fruittella launched new free-from Fruit Duo and Fruit Coin jellies across all channels. In line with the exponential growth of the free-from food market, up 305% in the last ten years , the NPD aims to build greater breadth and choice in the category.

It also underwent a modern makeover across 30 UK SKUs in January that moved to highlight the real fruit that goes into every pack. The overhaul also marked a key stage in its sustainability journey as it aims to save over five tonnes of plastic through a new plastic reduction programme with the move.
