With Covid cases surging, we are seeing a new ‘Pingdemic’ due to the NHS Track and Trace app alerting people who need to self isolate.

Grocer multiple Iceland has already closed stores after announcing that 4% of its entire workforce have been forced to self isolate due to being ‘pinged’. We are currently seeing record numbers of alerts, and this will surely have a trickle down effect into the convenience sector.

The main worry for us is in the sector is that our staff (or us ourselves) could be impacted but the so-called ‘Pingdemic’, so we must ensure we are all remaining as safe as we can and ensuring our staff do the same.

However, there is a chance that this could help the convenience sector in the short term… pub giant Greene King announced that they have been forced to close 33 pubs, after their staff were pinged by the app. Due to the closures, people in these areas may be looking to drink from home, so alcohol sales could see a rise.

But ultimately, we will just have to wait and see how this plays out. Stay safe everyone!
